Light Jig Heads
When the bite gets really tough it’s always a good idea to size down. Ultralight or light jig heads make it easy to slow down and present smaller baits and lures. The slow rate of fall when paired with a small plastic keeps a bait right in the strike zone a little longer for those finicky fish. When you look at ultralight or light jig heads you’ll find there are tons out there in several different weights and colors.
Mule Fishing Mule Jig 1/32-1/64 oz – Our Favorite
The Mule Fishing Mule Jig is unique and our favorite on the list. It come it multiple sizes and colors, but for ultralight fishing we like the 1/32-1/64oz sizes. What you have is essentially an ultralight ned rig with a good wire keeper. The wire keeper is important especially if you pair it up with any Mule Fishing Soft Plastic. Our favorites are the Donkey Tail Jr and the Mule Minnow.
Throw this on a medium to ultralight rod in the shallows and you’ll catch anything from small bluegill to some nice sized bass. The different color variations allow for visibility in different water conditions. The True Chartreuse color is great for stained or muddy water.
VMC Moon Eye Jig 1/32 oz – Best Eyes
VMC is a quality brand that makes quality terminal tackle and the VMC Moon Eye Jig is no exception. Our favorite is the 1/32 oz size. The Moon Eye Jig is great for targeting fish that are a little more suspicious of a regular jig head. The 3D holographic eye in the jig gives your soft plastic a realistic looking eye that could lead to getting hesitant fish to commit.
They come in a variety of colors and even in UV colors that work well in different light situations. Use these to catch a variety of species and even ice fishing.
Crappie Magnet Jig Heads – For Slab Crappie
Crappie Magnet Jig Heads are incredible. When paired with Crappie Magnet plastics, they are even better. Crappie Magnet jig heads are basically ball jig heads, but they have quality double hook keepers that keep the plastic on the jig.
If you’re a crappie angler and looking for new jigs for catching crappie, I recommend giving these a try. They come in a variety of colors that give you an additional way to mix and match colors with your crappie plastics.
Strike King Mr. Crappie Jig Heads – The Classic
If you’ve been fishing for a while you have heard of Strike King and Mr. Crappie. We like these jigs for multi-species, but when it comes to crappie they are a classic.
You can find them almost anywhere in a variety of sizes. Most of them come with an eye painted on that provides contrast from the main jig head color that makes the eye stand out. You can find these jig heads in almost any big box store and match them up with your favorite curly tail grub or ultralight plastic.

Mini Jigs have a space of their own. We are talking ultra-ultra light. You throw these when it just feels like you can’t fish any slower.
Mule fishing Mule Jig 1/80 oz
The 1/80 oz Mule Jig is a ringer. At 1/80 oz. you can still cast this pretty well on an ultralight rod and reel without adding any additional weight and the sink of this jig is super slow. It almost looks like it floats because it sinks so slowly.
To cast a jig of this size out you are going to need some really light line. You can get away with 4 lbs. test, but we recommend 2 lbs. test. Pair it with a 1.2 Mule Minnow or Donkey Tail Jr. and you’ll be catching fish in no time.
Trout jigs are small jig heads that are light weight and have small hooks perfect for hooking into trout. Because of the shape the mouth on a trout you generally want to use smaller hooks. You’re not limited to using these jigs for trout. You can catch bass, bluegill, perch, and any other kind of freshwater species.
Trout Magnet Jig Heads – Great for Panfish and Trout
Trout Magnets are a classic. When you think of trout fishing you inevitably come across the trout magnet lure. The shad dart shaped jig head is perfect for suspending jigs under a bobber and present trout magnet plastics perfectly. They are light at 1/64 oz, but can still be casted from a light or even a medium rod if you have a split shot sinker on it.
The classic silver or gold jig heads are great, but they also come in painted versions. We have also had success catching different species of panfish on it as well. The best part is they come in a variety of affordable kits.
Some of our favorites:
Berkley PowerBait Pre-Rigged Atomic Tubes – Tube Jigs For Trout
Berkley Atomic Tubes provide a different presentation. The action of a tube is great to try when you are struggling to get a bite on traditional ultralight plastics. They are dynamite for trout, but also great for Bass and other panfish species.
The added benefit of using a Berkley Powerbait tube is the Powerbait scent. The Powerbait scent is a huge confidence booster and we have seen it get hits when unscented baits cant’t.
Trout Mini Jig
When trout are heavily pressured and you need to size down, that’s when the big guns come out. Well, more like the little guns. A mini trout jig is small almost a nymph sized jig and can be difficult to cast if you are using too heavy of a set up, but once you get dialed in you will be catching fish in no time.
Mini Trout Magnet jig Heads
The Mini Trout Magnet jig head is our secret weapon. It is a 1/200 oz sized jig head and you read that right, a 1/200 oz jig head. Tiny-tiny like you wouldn’t believe, but it gets the attention of even the most lock jawed fish.
The Mini Trout Magnet kit is the best way to buy these jigs because it comes with mini trout magnet plastics. Cast these out under a bobber or use a mini drop shot rig to get these out.
Make sure you add some weight if you are going to cast these instead of dropping them vertically. Even with 2 lbs. test and an ultralight rod, they can be difficult to cast out properly.
Different Species You Can Catch On Ultralight Jigs
- Redear Sunfish (Shellcracker)

Ultralight jig heads are great for those hard days or whenever you just want to catch a ton of fish. Any one of the jigs on this list are going to give you a good chance of landing your next catch!
