Best Lures for Ice Fishing Crappie – Plastics
When it comes to ice fishing plastics, smaller is usually better. We are working with micro plastics. 2 inches or smaller is ideal. You want good action, durability, and great colors that are highly visible underneath the ice. Below we have 4 of the best ice fishing plastics for crappie.
Mule Fishing Mule Minnow 1.2 Inch
Our favorite ice fishing plastic is the 1.2 inch Mule Fishing Mule Minnow. The small minnow profile and crazy tail action makes it irresistible for crappie during open water season and works just as well in during ice fishing season too.
What we love about the Mule Minnow is the durability. One of our least favorite things, probably yours too, is having to change out plastics because the tail was bitten off by a short strike. With the Mule Minnow, you don’t need to worry about that. It’s made with high-stretch super durable plastic that can easily catch fish all day.
The colors available are great too. Our favorite is the Cowpoke color and the Dakota Sunrise. Slap these on a 1/80 oz Mule Jig and you’ll be catching fish in no time. If you’re looking to try your hand at catching bigger crappie, try sizing up to the 2.2 inch Mule Minnow.
13 Fishing Bernie Soft Plastic Lure
The 13 Fishing Bernie is a great ice fishing panfish lure. Anglers have had amazing success dropping this through the ice over a school of crappie. The ultra-fine 3D details give it amazing action in the water on a small jig. Dead stick it in the water and crappie wont be able to resist it. Our favorite color is the Snozberry and even though it’s not as durable as the Mule Fishing Mule Minnow, it will still last a while before you need to replace it. They are also infused with 13 Fishing’s Donkey Sauce that will give you an added edge over a scentless crappie ice fishing lure.
Berkley Powerbait Ice Mayfly
The Berkley Powerbait Ice Mayfly is another crappie lure you should keep in your keep in your ice fishing tackle box. It’s less than one inch size makes it irresistible for crappie through the ice. The small appendages give it amazing lifelike action imitating insects and bugs that are a natural forage for crappie.
The Chartreuse Shad color works great on those low visibility days when it’s overcast and not much light is getting through the ice. The Mayfly also comes covered in the proven Berkley Powerbait scent that makes fish hang on a little longer when they bite your lure.
Mule Fishing Horse Fly
For big crappies only. And small ones too. The Mule Fishing Horsefly is the largest crappie soft plastic lure on this list, but it catches fish. It is 1.5 inches long so not that much bigger than the Mule Minnow, but any Ice angler worth their salt knows that these micro differences in size matter when you’re trying to catch fish.
The Horse Fly is made out of the same durable plastic like the rest of the Mule Fishing plastics and is super stretchy. The two legs create so much action that in the most calm water they still move and attract fish. The red horse fly is deadly and if you’re struggling to catch a fish on anything, cut off the body and use the legs on it’s own to create a whole new presentation.
Best Ice Fishing Lures for Crappie – Jigs
Mule Fishing 1/64 oz. Mule Jig
Our favorite on the list is the 1/64 oz Mule Jig from Mule Fishing. The colors, the hook keeper and the hook size are all perfect for catching big ol crappie through the ice. The hook keeper on the jig is perfect for most plastics that tend to slip off your jig and work great with highly durable plastics like the Mule Minnow or Horse Fly. The popular colors are the Fire Red and True Chartreuse for catching crappies through the ice.
Lindy Tungsten Toad Jig
The Lindy Tungsten Toad Jig is our favorite tungsten ice fishing jig. While it only comes one to a pack it is under $5 which makes it one of the most affordable tungsten jig heads on the list. Lindy is a classic ice fishing brand and these jigs are perfectly weighted for vertical jig fishing through the ice. Tip it with your favorite live bait or plastic to catch some slab crappies.
Crappie Pro Mo’ Glo Glow-in-The-Dark Jig Heads
The Crappie Pro Mo’ Glo jigs are best bang for buck. You get 10 jigs for a very affordable price. While this isn’t a tungsten jig it is still effective under the ice. It comes in several sizes and the most common size is the 1/16 oz jig so you can get down deep in the water column. The tapered head shape makes it look like a small bait fish and if you pair this with a minnow plastic it will attract predator fish like crappie left and right. Jig it vertically and watch them come eat your lure.
Acme Tungsten Pendu Ice Jig
The Acme Tungsten Pendu Ice Jig is a great jig. The tungsten alloy allows this jig to be tiny in size, but weigh 5 grams or a little over 1/64 ozs. The glow in the dark color makes it highly visible in low light conditions so fish can key in to your lure. Pair this with your favorite plastic or tip it with some live bait to start catching some slab crappies.
Best Ice Fishing Crappie Lures
Ice fishing for crappies can be a great way to spend time on the hard ice during the winter.
